Political rally of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ogun East turned bloody as security operatives attached to the convoy of the party’s senatorial candidate, Buruji Kashamu allegedly shot one of the onlookers.
The victim identified as Bembe-Bembe was later rushed to Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisha-Remo in Ikenne Local Government area of the state for treatment.
A source at the event who preferred anonymity told our correspondent that the incident happened in Oku Owa ward three along Sabo market in Odogbolu local government area of the state.
According to him, ‎the campaign team of the senatorial candidate was done with the campaign when a vehicle in the convoy allegedly hit a passer-by and sustained injuries.
People in the area reportedly reacted to the incident and attempted blocking the convoy but were repelled by security operatives and personal security men attached to the politicians.
The security men, it was reported started shooting sporadically to scare people away and in the process his the man while the bullet pierced through his stomach.
“The incident happened in ward 3, Okun Owa around sabo market.‎ Buruji kashamu came to campaign in Okun but while his convoy was about leaving, one of the car in d convoy hit a guy and it resulted in argument.
“Immediately Buruji’s guy which was on black vest was shooting sporadically into the air to scare people living in the area took to their heels.
“The case was settled but while d convoy was moving, the last car of the convoy now shot the guy,” he said.
But the Director General of the Campaign Organisation, Otunba Leke Adekoya said nothing of such happened during the campaign.
Adekoya who spoke with our correspondent in a telephone chat said, “Nothing like that happened, we didn’t record any such case during our rallies.”
But the state Police Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Prince Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the shooting.
Adejobi however explained that unidentified gunmen shot the victim after the PDP rally adding that no suspect has been arrested.
He also revealed that the victim was recuperating in the hospital adding that the state commissioner of police had also directed a thorough investigation into the matter.
“We had the report of unidentified gunmen after the rally, we can’t get anybody for now but we are going to do through investigation into the matter.
“The victim is in the hospital and recuperating and responding to treatment but we are unable to identify the perpetrators who fired the shot but we are going to spread out tentacles to get them,” he said.
