At least 10 members of Islamic fundamentalists were feared dead as two Military personnel were critically injured in a gun battle when the soldiers engaged some Islamic fundamentalists at Okene in the Central Senatorial District of Kogi State in a gun duel.
It was gathered that Soldiers in large numbers acting on tip off stormed the Islamic Fundamentalists enclave at Inike area of ancient town of Okene in Kogi state at the early hours of Thursday, and in the process 10 members of the Islamic sect were allegedly killed and 2 soldiers were said to have received serious injury.
It was learnt that the military had traced some of the suspects allegedly said to have been part of those that carried out attack on Department of State Security Services in Lokoja recently to the Inike area in Okene; and in the process there was an exchange of gunshots between the fundamentalists that felt being challenged and the soldiers who were on a national assignment.
A reliable source stated that several members of the sect fell to the superior fire power of the Military men during the battle which started around on Tuesday in the area of Okene.
It was also gathered that the Mosque in the area was raised down, while Military Hilux that ferried the soldiers for the operation was said to have been burnt down in the melee that followed.
An eye witness posited that the entire Inike area of Okene was deserted as the exchange of fire between the fundamentalists and the soldiers peaked, saying that many residents ran out for cover for fear of being caught by stray bullets.
