A motor accident which occurred in the early hours of yesterday on Okene-Lokoja Road has claimed 12 persons and 22 cows.
Nigerian Pilot learnt that 11 of the victims, eight men and four women were occupants of a luxury bus with registration number Lagos KRD 799 LC travelling from Lagos to Abuja, while the only occupant in the articulated vehicle died when it collided with a luxury bus.
An eyewitness said that the accident occurred at about 5am at a spot in Irepeni village on the Okene-Lokoja Highway as a result of head-on collision.
According to the eyewitness the driver of the luxury bus was trying to avoid a barricade mounted by armed robbers and in the process collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction.
He added that drivers of the bus and the cattle carrying truck with registration number Katsina KTN 711 YZ were among the 12 who died on the spot.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr. Charles Abochi, confirmed the accident, saying that 73 passengers were involved in the road crash.
He said that 16 persons: 12 men, three women and one female child received various degrees of injuries in the accident.
While he said that the injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja for treatment, the corpses were deposited at the morgues of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja and Alheri Hospital at Kabba junction.
Abochi said the report of how the accident happened was still sketchy, adding that investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the accident had commenced.
