No fewer than 19 Tiv people massacred on Sunday morning by suspected Fulani militia in Keana Local Government Area of Nasrawa State were yesterday buried amidst tears by relations and sympathisers.
The burial held at Demekaa, one of the affected villages, amidst heavy presence of security operatives who stood at strategic locations to prevent further break down of law and order while the mass burial lasted.
Gunmen had at the weekend invaded three Tiv villages in Keana Local Government Area of the state, killing over 19 persons.
A fleeing resident of the area, Mr. Tyovenda Adenger told Nigerian Pilot that the attackers had barricaded the Keana-Bakin-Kogi Benue border road and opened fire on their victims just as the attackers who were said to have divided themselves in groups simultaneously razed down the affected villages.
Our correspondent also gathered that some of the fleeing residents from Tse-Uosu, Demekaa, Boutsa, all in Keana, who were taking refuge at the palace of the paramount ruler of Keana, HRH Emmanuel Elayo, had to be relocated to the divisional police station in the area as the suspected Fulani militia had threatened to attack the palace if the fleeing residents were not released for further attack.
Sources alleged that the incident was a reprisal attack as some yet-to-be unidentified persons had allegedly attacked some herdsmen at Daudu area of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, but one of the survivors, Mr. Boniface Kwaghngee, wondered why the Tiv people of Nasarawa State could be killed because of an incident that happened in Benue State.
Another fleeing resident, Mr. Iorwuese Adum who narrowly escaped the attack alleged that the attack was a conspiracy against the Tiv community, lamenting the inability of the state government to issue a public statement condemning the ugly incident two days after the attack.
Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Nasrawa State command, ASP Umar Numan who had confirmed the incident could not be reached for an update on efforts being made by the command to forestall lasting peace.
