Following the killing of Gen. Ironsi in the second coup in Nigeria which is also known as revenge coup on the 1st of August 1966, General Yakubu “Jack” Dan-Yumma Gowon was made the Head of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. He took power after one military coup d’état and was overthrown in another.
During his rule, the Nigerian government successfully prevented Biafran secession during the 30 months period of Nigerian/Biafran Civil War.
In accepting Biafra’ unconditional cease-fire, Gowon declared that there would be no victor and no vanquished. In this spirit, the years afterward were declared to be a period of 3Rs, Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation. His administration also introduced the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, as a means of reconciling the people of Nigeria.
