A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and one of the Directors of the Odu’a Investment Company Ltd, OICL, Otunba Olajumoke Ogunkeyede has called for the overhaul of the nation’s laws to reflect the current reality in the country.
The APC leader, who spoke with journalists in Ibadan, yesterday, was reacting to the current judicial pronouncement in which the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), who is currently standing trial over allegation of diversion of $2.1 billion arms funds, was granted bail by the court, but was rearrested by the security agents.
It would be recalled that the issue had led to controversies with some people accusing the Federal Government of being abusive of the rule of law, while some felt nothing was wrong with what happened considering the degree of the alleged offence committed by the former NSA.
Ogunkeyede, however, was of the opinion that the judiciary should not be blamed but the existing laws, which are not firm enough in dealing with corruption, saying, “it is not the fault of the judiciary, there has to be a change in the nation’s laws.
“A system that allows a person that steals N1 billion for instance to get bail in court because he has enough money to hire a good lawyer, but, which sends a person that steals an ordinary goat to seven-year imprisonment because of his lack of money for a good counsel cannot be said to be alright.
“There has to be reordering of the judiciary and even the legislature. Look at the case of the National Assembly proposing to buy billions of Naira worth of vehicles, I don’t think there’s any law that stops it, but, these are the kind of things we should look into.
“If President Muhammadu Buhari is able to inherit some vehicles from his predecessor and feel comfortable riding them, I think that should instil fear in the legislators and say we should be careful. But there’s no law that says they should be careful and yet, they are the same people that are supposed to make the law that will ask them to be careful.
“We need people at the corridors of power who will be on the same page with the people on the need to do things right in this country, we need to change some of our laws for this country to really jump forward, the level at which we are moving is very slow, we need to jump forward but not with some of the existing laws,” he asserted.
The Osun-born politician also described the revelation that some people were after the live of President Buhari as something that should be taken for granted because, according to him, “there’s no way corruption would be fought and it would not fight back.
He said, “Even without anyone saying it, you should know that it should be natural for such heinous idea to be muted, because those people having skeletons in their cupboards now see Mr. President as their number one enemy that must be eliminated. But don’t forget that man proposes, God disposes, if God is not ready to bring Buhari down, none of them will succeed.
“President Buhari will prevail and by the grace of God, nobody will eliminate him. By the grace of God, nobody will eliminate Buhari so that he can continue with the job he is doing for Nigeria to be on the right path. If anybody touches Buhari, that will be the end of Nigeria,” he added.
