Detectives from Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of Lagos State Police Command, Panti-Yaba, Lagos, yesterday arraigned two car dealers, Lekan Shonibare, 52, and Morufu Akinlade, 38, before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a Volvo HOB truck.
The two accused persons, according to the detectives, allegedly committed the offence sometime in October 2014, about 2pm at the Engineering warehouse of National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration Control, NAFDAC, Oshodi, Lagos.
The stolen 18 tons tipper valued at N1.3million, according to the detectives, belonged to one Deaconess Morenike Odulami
Odunlami, who is a car importer.
The detectives said to have hired Morufu, the second accused, as her assistance, who conspired with Lekan, the first accused, to sell the Tipper, without the owner’s consent.
The accused persons were arraigned on two count charges of conspiracy and stealing. The offences according to the prosecutor, Woman Sergeant Mariam Dauda, are contrary to and punishable under sections 409 and 285 of the criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria 2011.
Count one of the charge reads: “That you Lekan Shonibare and Morufu Akinlade sometimes in October 2014 at about 1400hrs at NAFDAC ,SHO’s Engineering Warehouse Oshodi Lagos, did conspired together to wit stealing and thereby committed an offense punishable under section 409, laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.”
And count two reads; “that you Lekan Shonibare and Morufu Akinlade on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district, did steal one Volvo HOB 18 tons Tipper valued N1.3m, property of one Deaconess Morenike Odulami and thereby committed an offense punishable under 285(9)(b)(e) of the criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.”
The two accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Upon their plea, their lawyer, A.C Abazu , urged the court to admit them to bail in the most liberal term.
The presiding magistrate, Honourable O.A Komolafe admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like terms and adjourned the matter till July 15, for mention.
