Two staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abia State are in police net for illegal possession of the Commission’s sensitive materials.
Head of the Information Communication Technology, ICT department, Mr Herbert Ejiofor, and his colleague, Nnamdi Nwabuko were said to be in possession of seven card reading machines without the permission of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Prof. Selina Oko.
Oko told journalists in her office in Umuahia that she was surprised to hear that a staff of the Commission could arrange to take away sensitive materials from the Commission’s strong room without her permission even as the two staff have been handed over to the police.
She said the duo were caught by the security at the Commission’s headquarters on Monday evening as they were trying to drive out with the materials but were not allowed to leave until Tuesday morning when she was informed of the development, adding that the AIG Zone 9, Usman Gwarri sent his men to arrest the suspects who she said were at the Zone 9 police command headquarters Umuahia for further investigation.
“The police should conduct proper investigation and take the right action. I am in charge; they are taking things out without my permission.
“Even I as the REC do not take sensitive materials away from the office except it is demanded by my chairman in Abuja,” she said.
Nigerian Pilot reports that the AIG Zone 9, Usman Gwarri, had said it would be too early to conclude what they wanted to do with the card readers or to establish any case of crime until investigation was concluded.
In his reaction, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Head of Intelligence and Surveillance, Mr. Mike Chidi Ahiabike said the party has been monitoring the INEC staff and security personnel since the result was declared.
He accused the ruling party of conniving with INEC staff to manipulate the card readers to reflect what he described as the fraudulent result from Obingwa, Osisioma and Isiala Ngwa North.
He said they have it on good authority that the two staff were also in possession of the result sheets of the three local government areas even as he insisted that the card readers were those used for the election in Obingwa.
According to him, the aim was to take the card readers to an ICT expert who would manipulate them in order to be able to defend the result at the election petition tribunal.
In his reaction, member representing Umunneochi State Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, Hon .Ikedi Ezekwesili, said they wanted to ensure that the figures they posted from those three local government areas tallied with the card reader.
