Ahead of this year’s African Basketball Championship slated for August, Chief Statistician of Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF Mr Ogbole Obande has warned that Nigeria would be far from emerging champions if necessary machineries are not put in place.
Obande who spoke to Nigerian Pilot Sports in Abuja pointed that the country’s Senior National Men Basketball team have the caliber of players to win 2015 Afrobasket and reach the global zenith.
According to him “We must come to a quick realization that sports is about numbers; the number of basket you score, the number of basket you stop your opponents from scoring. if we don’t stick with the numbers, facts and record. We are not likely to go anywhere.
“Let’s forget all this flash in pan owing to the fact that we get up to the final and don’t win. It’s because of those small numbers that we don’t look at and that is what other teams look at and that is why they get to where they get to.
“Nigerian team, both male and female are strong and physical but let me tell you as a strong man if i throw a punch but it does meet the target and if a weak man throws a small stone and it meets the target, definitely it will obstruct even with a small stone.
While rating Nigerian Basketball, Obande who is equally an official of Mark Mentors basketball club maintained “Well, we are among the best, we are in the top three in Africa, any which way, we are there, we remain in the top three.
“All we need to do is to go back to fundamental not just about D’Tigers, its all about basketball in Nigeria. Realistically speaking, we can get to the top once we luck up all loop holes. We will get there, everybody is scared of Nigeria, i don’t understand how Nigeria can produce several individuals and we cannot produce one fundamental Nigerian team.
