Ahead of the coming Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, congresses to elect new officers at the state levels, a socio-political group, Owerri League of Patriots, OLP, has called on the party to adhere to principle of zoning of elective offices from the governorship to the last party office in Imo State to avert another electoral mishap come 2019.
In a seven point resolution at the end of its meeting held in Owerri North, Imo State, the group observed that mutual distrust and avoidable internal wrangling remain the bane of the PDP in Imo State and accounts for its poor performance in the 2011 and 2015 governorship elections in the state.
The resolution endorsed by notable Owerri zone indigenes including Oshieze Vincent Ehirim, Sir Chimdi Ejiogu, Dr. J.I.C Osondu, Lolo Florence Bright, Sir Law Biaduo, Dr. Gab Onyekuru, Barr. Kezie Ogaziechi, Hon. Clinton Amadi, Nze Charles Onwunali, Ezeji Charlton Osuagwu, Chief (Mrs) Getrude Iroemeh, Hon. Ben Mere, Hon. Ray Emeana, Arc Magnus Chilaka, Hon. Kems Obichere amongst many others, cautioned, “until fairness and equity are made the basis of zonal engagement, PDP as a formidable political platform would continue to perform poorly in future elections”
The OLP members stated that in line with the principles of equity and fairness, Orlu and Okigwe geo-political zones should support Owerri zone’s aspiration for the 2019 governorship of Imo State.
The group maintained that zoning of offices is the panacea needed to avoid internal wrangling, stressing that “the Party’s leadership should zone offices across board before the congresses to avoid any future intra-party squabbles that might tear the party apart.
It further urged PDP faithful in the state to emulate its national leadership’s zoning arrangement for peace and cohesion in the Party.
The OLP averred that there should be unity of purpose amongst PDP members irrespective of zonal or individual interests, noting in an apparent veiled reference to OZOPOLF, that it was also “aware of the antics in the past by some Owerri zone’s sons and daughters who betrayed the trust of championing the cause of the zone.”
The set back and betrayal notwithstanding, the resolution pleaded with “the people of Owerri zone to fully lend support to this noble cause which holds the key to having a strong and virile PDP in Imo State.
