2019 Guber: A’Ibom Community in Abuja distance self from Nsima Ekere’s endorsement

Indigenes of Akwa Ibom resident in Abuja and the entire northern states yesterday distanced self from the recent endorsement of the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Obong Nsima Ekere by the community led by Akparawa Tommy Okon.

Addressing Journalist in Abuja, the Dean, College of Federal Constituency in Abuja, Akparawa Dominic Mbat, in strong terms condemned the endorsement describing it as a rape on democracy as it was a personal decision and never represented the minds of Akwa Ibom community in Abuja and the entire 19 northern states.

Akparawa Mbat explained further that right from time, the community has always remained apolitical and has no right so ever to endorse any particular candidate as its members has every right to support any candidate of their choice.

To buttress his point, he said although several candidates do visit the community for consultations and familiarization, it is not in its place to endorse any candidate and deprive other once the opportunity to come and meet with their brothers and sisters to declare their intentions.

“As members of the Board of Trustee (BOT), we are the owners of the community. For any substantial thing to have happened we would have been consulted, are opinion would have been sort, but in this case nothing like that happened.

“When our noble sons and daughters arrived the venue of our regular meeting, we were happy to receive them thinking that it was going to be a regular consultations as it has been the practice.

It was surprising to us as members of BOT, Patrons, Patronesses, Elders of the community to witness and endorsement of one of our sons in person of Obong Nsima Ekere, the governorship candidate of the APC and to worsen it all, the President of the community in the person of Akparawa Tommy Etim was the one who moved the motion which was seconded by one lady, Caroline Ndayo.

“No such thing has ever taken place in the community since its inception. We as a community has never on any occasion worked against the government back at home.

“Therefore, we stand today to refute what was widely acclaimed as an endorsement of a governorship candidate by the Abuja residents and the 19 northern states from Akwa Ibom extraction.

“It couldn’t have been without consultations and we wouldn’t have endorsed anybody. If we were to endorse anybody, the Governor visited us recently, did all we asked him to do and even promised more which he has already fulfilled some.

“If the constitution had permitted endorsement, I think it would have been the appropriate thing for us to have endorsed him but we didn’t.”

Also speaking the Woman Leader of the Community, Dr Josephine Odungide, stated emphatically that the women were not in support of the endorsement and couldn’t have endorsed the APC candidate when the Governor Emmanuel Udom has done much for the women in the state including the areas of appointments and empowerment.

Receiving the position letter on behalf of the governor, Special Assistant to the Governor Udom on Grassroots Mobilization in Abuja and the 19 northern states, Hon. Emmanuel Inyang, thanked the stakeholders for taking the bold step to refute the insinuations that was spread in both social media and the traditional media, adding that the governor would stop at nothing to ensure that every Akwa Ibom citizen enjoys the dividends of democracy.
