Corps members urged to sensitise host communities on Voters’ education

1,600 Corps members pass out in Kogi

Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Alhaji Muhammad Bello, has urged Corps members serving in the territory to constitute themselves into small enlightenment and sesitisation groups to educate their host communities as well as create awareness in the areas of voters’ education as it relates to their rights and obligations.

The minister gave the charge yesterday during the closing ceremony of the 2018 Batch ‘B’ Stream II orientation course in Abuja.

Describing the people of FCT as peace loving, friendly, quite accommodating and always waiting to receive into their community every set of Corps members posted to the territory, he urged them to reciprocate the gesture by working towards bringing their host towns to the socio-political limelight and realities of our time.

“I am confident that the essence of the orientation programme had perfected the needful in every one of you, and that you are better equipped than ever to face your primary assignments and beyond with vigor and confidence.

“Constitute yourself into small enlightenment and sensitization groups to educate them and create awareness in the areas of voters’ education as it relates to their rights and obligations; and on Agricultural (acting as Agricultural extension Officers) particularly on the use of modern equipment and generally on the need to cultivate every piece of land lying valor within the community.

“I urged you to educate them also on the importance of personal/individual or collective security, stressing the fact that security generally is everyone’s business and cannot be left for government alone.”

He further charged them to make good use of the principles and practices of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme at their different places of assignment.

“Your work must attest to a corps member who had been meticulously branded with loads of skills to deal with challenging responsibilities. You must invoke and charge up your creative and innovative abilities, and remain focused on doing things differently and always aim at specific contributions and excellence which is the height of participating in the NYSC scheme.”

The Minister who was represented by the Secretary for Education in the FCT, Senator Isah Maina, expressed satisfaction on the report of high sense of discipline, enthusiasm and comportment demonstrated by the corps members during the three (3) weeks camping exercise.

He therefore reassured the scheme of the FCTA’s support to ensure it succeed in every bid of its statutory responsibilities besides hosting successful and hitch-free orientation programmes.

Earlier in his welcome address, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, Ballama Birniwa, urged the corps members to prove themselves good ambassadors of the scheme.

He also pledged to work assiduously as a team to channel its energies towards ensuring accelerated national development and of course that of FCT in particular as part of its statutory responsibilities.

The FCT Coordinator thanked the minister as well as the Director General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Kazaure for always playing the fatherly role especially on matters of matters of statutory responsibility to the NYSC FCT.
