Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has said that the state is playing host to about 22,000 corps members serving in the various local governments of the state.
Emmanuel stated this during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2015 Batch ‘A’ stream 2 Orientation Course for corps members deployed to the state said that 11,000 out of 230, 000 corps members mobilised for the orientation nationwide were posted to the state.
The Governor further stated that apart from the present batch the state was already hosting 11,000 corps members, attributing this to adequate facilities and the hospitable disposition of the people of the state to strangers
He expressed readiness to improve on the facilities at the permanent orientation camp in Nsit Atai local council of the state promising to redeem the pledge made by the immediate past Governor of the state, Chief Godswill Akpabio to the NYSC..
“This government is a continuum from the previous government of Chief Godswill Akpabio. So, we assure you that in the next few weeks, all the promises that were made by the previous administration would be fulfilled. Already, we would provide a well package ambulance for the camp and make a cash donation for the equipment of the orientation camp”.
“I want to assure you that this government is aware of the challenges of the camp and we would make sure that we provide such needed facilities in the camp, because the welfare of corps members in our state is our utmost concern.
The governor, who reiterated the state government’ readiness to make their stay comfortable and a memorial one, promised to liaise with the state Ministry of Lands and Surveys to proffer solutions to accommodation problems faced by the corps members.
While reading the address of President Muhammadu Buhari thanked corps members in the country for their willingness to serve the country through the scheme and charged them to embrace attitudinal change and to support his administration for the country to move forward.
The President also lauded the NYSC management for giving hope and succour to the youths in terms of self-employment, among others, and urged corps members to be good ambassadors of change and to cooperate with host communities where they are posted to.
