Barely 72hours after the Imo State Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Owerri commenced hearing on the petitions challenging the victory of Governor Rochas Okorocha, governorship candidates and their political parties in the state have withdrawn their petitions against the governor at the tribunal.
The guber candidates and political parties that took the bold step include: Hon. Chigozie Ewunonu, National Conscience Party, NCP; Charles Nnadi, African Peoples Alliance, APA, and Pastor Anselem Igbokwe of Mega Progressive Peoples Party, MPPP.
A reliable source close to the trio confirmed that they withdrew their respective petitions following the granting of their application for withdrawal which led to the matters being struck out by the tribunal judge headed by Hon. Justice David Wyon.
The three governorship candidates, it was further gleaned, took the action in the interest of Imo people with regard to the outcome of the 2015 gubernatorial election.
Meanwhile, the Imo State government has on behalf of the good people of the state commended the governorship candidates of the the political parties for withdrawing their petitions at the tribunal, saying they acted in the overall interest of the state and her people.
In a statement issued yesterday by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, government observed that by withdrawing their petitions “they had chosen not to be part of any development that would constitute distraction to the government in the state or somewhat disturbance to the governor.”
Efforts to reach the three governorship candidates for their comments proved abortive as at press time.
