Renewed clashes among rival cult groups have left no fewer than three persons dead in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
Among those killed was a man simply identified as Papa Obodo, who was allegedly beheaded by suspected cultists, yesterday.
Trouble started at a popular drinking bar around Sakponba road in the metropolis, following a disagreement between the groups on Sunday which took a worrisome twist later in the night when some gunmen suspected to be cultists shot an unidentified man to death in the neighbourhood.
Also yesterday, two gunmen were alleged to have shot a man simply identified as Osaze at close range around Second East Circular road when the victim was escaping from suspected cultists that stormed his home.
An eyewitness account said the gunmen afterwards gave the victim a hot chase before firing at him, adding that “they (gunmen) first hit Osaze with a machete on the head and later shot him to death. The cultists were overheard chanting one, one score-line after killing their victim.”
It was gathered from sympathizers at the scene that Osaze, who was dressed in black long-sleeved shirt and brown trousers when the gunmen struck, was mourning his late father whose remains is still in the mortuary.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, said the killing was as a result of cold war between cult groups.
He noted that it might have been in retaliation, as according to him, in June, a member of one of the groups was shot dead.
Ezike said the police is on top of the situation, as some arrests have been made in connection with the killing, just as he called on parents to always monitor their wards so that they would not be used for cult wars.
