AT least five people lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries, following a flood disaster that submerged Kamarawa village in Dange/ Shuni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. State Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Suleiman Muhammad, who was at the scene, described the situation as unfortunate, saying “NEMA is working to evacuate the affected villagers.’’ He said most of the victims have relocated to nearby schools and expressed optimisim that the agency will partner with the state government to find lasting solutions to the problem. However, a reliable source revealed to our correspondent in Sokoto that a heavy downpour which lasted throughout the night destroyed farm produce, as well as houses in Kamarawa. The NEMA boss warned those living close to riverine areas to immediately evacuate all their belongings so as to aviod another calamity. “We are warning those living close to water bank areas to as a matter of urgency vacate the area because of an impending calamity,” he added. While adding that NEMA is working hard to ensure that all those affected relocate to a temporal destination for urgent assistance, he added the agency is ready and also working hand-in-hand with other donor agencies to cater for those affected. Meanwhile, another culvert linking Usmanu Danfodiyo University through Kwalkwala Bridge with the state capital has collapsed.
