(CNN)An avalanche near McBride, British Columbia, has killed five people, according to Donita Cuzma of the British Columbia Coroners Service.

The avalanche struck at about 1:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. ET).

Two groups of snowmobilers were involved, according to Cuzma. Six survivors from one of the groups were rescued by a search team.

Avalanche Canada, a nongovernmental organization, said that it received a report of “what appears to be a very large, significant avalanche event,” and knows it was human-triggered.

McBride is about 470 miles from Vancouver.
