No fewer than seven persons have been confirmed dead, while 17 others were critically injured in an accident which happened yesterday at the Sagamu/Iperu Remo junction of the Benin-Ore expressway.
The accident, which occurred near the Sagamu Police Area Commander’s office involved a Toyota Hummer Bus marked (LAGOS) BDG 789 XJ which crashed into another Mazda bus marked (ONDO) REE 248 XA.
It was gathered that the passenger-filled Toyota Hummer bus marked was suspected to be carrying passengers who were returning to Lagos from their Yuletide festival in the Eastern part of the country.
It was further gathered that the driver of the Toyota Hummer bus had lost control of the bus which made it veered off its lane and crossed the road divider (median) before crashing into the Mazda bus going outwards Sagamu.
The Ogun state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Adegoke Adetunji who confirmed the accident to journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital explained that a total number of 28 persons were involved in the auto crash which claimed the lives of seven persons.
Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, who attributed the cause of the auto crash to over-speeding, further explained that 17 other victims rescued alive were in critical condition.
Adetunji also explained that those rescued alive have been taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, OOUTH, for medical attention, while corpses of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the same hospital in Sagamu.
The Ogun FRSC boss also stated that it took the combined efforts of officers from his commission, the Police as well as those of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency to clear the expressway to prevent another road crash as well as traffic gridlock in the area.
