NOT FEWER than eight persons were last Tuesday feared dead while several others were injured when unknown gunmen struck at a popular beer parlour in Tor Donga, a semi urban settlement in Katsina/Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. An eyewitness told Nigerian Pilot that the gunmen who came into the town on motorcycles at about 9pm of the fateful day, headed straight to the popular drinking spot where they opened fire on the unsuspecting customers, killing three on the spot. The source narrated further that those injured were receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the state. When contacted, the state police spokesman, ASP Moses Yamu confirmed the incident but said that only three persons lost their lives during the attack. Yamu further said officers and men of the command had been drafted to the area to forestall further attack as investigation had commenced on the incident. Meanwhile, the sole administrator of the local government area, Hon Vera Akua has condemned the attack, describing it as most unfortunate and barbaric. Speaking through her special assistant on Media, Mr Godwin Iwanan, the council boss expressed concerne that the attack came barely a month after a traditional ruler in the area was gruesomely murdered by unidentified persons. She expressed sadness that these acts of cruelty were being perpetrated at a time government was making concerted efforts towards ridding the state of criminal elements as exemplified by the stick approach of the Gov Samuel Ortom amnesty programme. The council boss condoled with the families of those that lost their lives as well as the injured, and appealed to the people to remain calm as government was going to do all within its powers to ensure the safety of lives and property of people in the area.
