Nine persons were on Tuesday burnt dead when an articulated vehicle laden with chippings rammed into a coaster bus at Izzamgbo-135 axis along Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.
It took the intervention of fire fighters in the state to quench the inferno.
An eyewitness told Nigerian Pilot that the accident occurred when a trailer whose front tire busted and lost control rammed into a coaster bus and consequently, causing the bus to go up in flames.
An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, confirmed the incident but said that the sector commander and officers of the command were still at the accident scene and were yet to ascertain the number of casualties.
He said the bodies of the deceased had been conveyed to the hospital by men of corps.
“The sector commander is still at the accident scene; you can observe that our ambulance is still convening bodies.
“We can’t give exact number of death in the incident now, till tomorrow,” he said.
But the director of Ebonyi Fire Services, Mr James Owoh in a telephone chat confirmed that nine persons lost their lives in the incident.
He said out of the nine deaths, three were burnt beyond recognition while 12 others sustained high degrees of injuries.
He affirmed that the accident was caused by a trailer whose front tire busted and lost control to ram into a coaster bus.
