Determined to inspire Secondary Schools students across the country by giving them the opportunity to showcase their God-given talents in sports, Asaba the Delta state capital is set to host the displays and grand finale of the participating teams in the 18th Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Champions this week.
It was gathered that over 9,000 schools across the country have been jostling for the prestigious trophy of champions and about one million basketball related gifts are up for grabs in the Milo Basketball “Building Champions in Life”promotion which started across Nigeria on the 16th of last month.
Speaking in Asaba yesterday at the National Draws of the 18th Milo Basketball Champiionship, the Category Manager-Beverages, Nestle Nigeria PLC, Mr. Femi Akintola said a good number of players in the Premier Basketball league have participated in the Milo Secondary Schools Basketball championship.
Mr. Femi Akintola said; “this week Asaba, the Delta state capital will witness highly energetic basketball displays as the group games begin on Tuesday 7th June 2016. On Saturday 11th June, the grand finale of the championship will be staged at the Indoor Sports hall Asaba township stadium”.
“At the end of this week long encounter, the first placed teams in both the male and female categories will go home with championship trophies and various amount of cash rewards for the development of sports facilities in their respective schools”, he emphasized.
Mr. Akintola reiterated that the Milo Secondary Schools Basketball champions has played a key role in producing national and international basketball stars, adding “some of our champions are also currently playing in other international premier Basketball leagues in USA, Spain, Germany, Portugal, China and elsewhere”.
On his part, the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie assured the visiting teams that Delta state was ready for hosting of the teams as all arrangements have been made to ensure security of lives and property of the teams as well as the success of the championship.
The Commissioner who spoke through the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. D.O.Onogbo said that choosing Delta state as this year’s host of the championships showed that the state has been in love in sporting activities, saying “Delta state has won severally in basketball championship.
