You do not need a prophet or prophetess to tell you that the activities of criminals in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, cannot be over emphasised. Some of these criminals are believed to reside within and interact with the people during the day and turn out to terrorise the innocent citizens in the night. And their activities have increased during this yuletide period.
It is true that the FCT police command and other security agencies are doing their best to fight and eliminate these criminals and their activities in the city but more effort is needed because there are some areas where they are still operating freely.
A cross section of residents of FCT have expressed fear that the increase in the cases of abandoned buildings in the territory is fast becoming a security threat to their lives.
Particularly, as abandoned buildings have become a safe haven for hooligans in the city, the residents have appealed to the FCT administration to take action to forestall any threat to life of the people.
Nigerian Pilot Sunday observed that the hooligans, who have taken free residence in uncompleted and abandoned buildings, use the facilities to carry out their devilish activities.
For example, in Garki, Area 1, close to newspaper distribution centre, these sets of people have turned a building previously occupied by the Deeper life Bible Church into a safe sanctuary. “The church no longer use the property because it was partly demolished by the FCT administration but some of the street boys have turned the remaining part of the building to a place of abode where they smoke Indian hemp and take all sorts of hard drugs,” one of the neighbour told Nigerian Pilot Sunday.
The resident, who does not want his name to be mentioned in print, stated that the hooligans always take to their heels once they sight policemen for fear of being arrested, “but even if the policemen succeed in arresting them, you will be surprised to see that some of them get released once they can afford to pay N1000 to the officers.”
Also speaking on the atrocities that are going on in the building, a woman who simply identify herself as Madam Ann, who has her kiosk close to the area, told Nigerian Pilot Sunday that the house is now the home of miscreants since the church left the place after its demolition by the Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA.
A newspaper vendor, Mr. Donates Amadi disclosed that some of the hooligans have turned the remaining part of the building to their residential home and called on the police to come to the aid of the people living and doing business around the premises.
“Everybody in this area is aware that this place is for miscreants and smokers, as you can see, some of them are even washing their clothes there. That is their home, sometimes policemen will come here and arrest some of them who were not lucky enough to escape into the bush.
“So, I want the police to find out a means, if possible get a bulldozer and demolish the building completely.”
One of the smokers who had a chat with our reporter said whenever he goes there to smoke, he normally has money in his pocket to bail himself immediately the police arrest him.
“Whenever I come here to smoke, I will make sure that I have N1000 in my pocket because any time they search you and see the money, they will release you, they will see you as a responsible person. But if you don’t have anything, they will use you to make money at the station.
“So, to be on a safer side, whenever you are smoking here, make sure you have N1000 with you in order to bail yourself instantly without reaching the station because if you reach there, you and your people will spend so much money. As I am here now, I have up to N1000 with me in case of any usual thing.”
When contacted for reaction on the matter, the FCT police, Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Manzah Anjuguri, said he will investigate the issue and call back. But at the time of filling-in this report, he has not replied.
To this end, owners of uncompleted buildings must make sure that these houses are completed so that they will not serve as a hideout for kidnappers, thieves, robbers, Indian hemp smokers and all forms of criminals.
On the other hand, the police and other security agencies in the city are advised to brace up, take it upon themselves to make sure that these smokers and criminals are pushed out of this place as well as other places where they operate because their presence is a big security challenge to people living around the area and the society at large. This is very important because some of the criminal activities in the country were engineered, orchestrated and executed in some of these places.
