House of Representatives has hinted that once they are done with the debate on the 2016 budget, the various ministers will come to the National Assembly to tell Nigerians what they have done in their respective ministries.
Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas disclosed this to House Press Corps recently at the National Assembly complex.
He said that it had become imperative for the ministers to brief them on their respective activities in their ministries.
Namdas explained that the idea was part of the change the APC government promised Nigerians.
He also said the House will this week commence debate on the 2016 budget.
While the whereabouts of the budget estimates has remained a subject of controversy in the Senate, the House of Reps has maintained that the document as presented by the President was still intact and dismissed reports on its disappearance.
Namdas explained that why they had
not commenced debate on the budget was that members were not given copies to study.
He noted that members need to have copies of the budget estimates to make informed contribution on the budget debate on the floor of the House.
According to him, “We will start debate on the budget by this week. Why we could not do it last week was that we were not given the copy before we went on break. We need to have the copy of the budget, go through it before the debate can commence.
“We are strictly working with the document presented to us by the President”.
Reacting on the alleged collection of car loan by members, Namdas pointed out that they had not taken any car loan.
He clarified that the cars were meant for every member of the House to enable them carry out their legislative work, adding that they would be willing to see the President as regards the purchase of cars for their oversight function.
The spokesman also said they would start compelling Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs to comply with motions of the House, adding that it had become embarrassing that these agencies flaunt House motions with impunity.
