National President of the Youth Mountain of Hope, Comrade Chikeze Erege, has embarked on a 40-day hunger strike to bring to the notice of the federal government, the increasing rate of unemployment in the country.
Erege, who was on a one-man protest at the premises of the National Assembly in Abuja, berated government for the high level of corruption which has led to the alarming rate of unemployment, especially amongst the youth.
He commended the government for declaring war against corruption, while noting that the same effort should be extended to the grassroots for effective result.
“I want the government to kill corruption from the grassroots to the top because it is the major predicament confronting Nigeria today, which has made youths to engage in social vices that are detrimental to their personal wellbeing and the socio-economic growth of the country.’’
He tasked government at all levels to invest in the agricultural sector by procuring modern equipment that would improve productivity because this is what will encourage the youths to go into farming, earn a proper living and improve the economy.
When asked why he embarked on a one-man protest when there are other members of his group, Erege said it was in consideration of the security situation in the country, describing the move as the best because an individual cannot make trouble.
Speaking further on the hunger strike, the activist disclosed that he has been without food for 40 days already and has traveled round the states of the federation to inform the government on the poor state of youths, adding that he believes government will give him attention.
