Former FIFA Executive Committee member, Amos Adamu has declared that he won’t accept to serve in active capacity as an administrator with the world Football governing body, FIFA and Confederation of African Football.
Adamu who exclusively disclosed this to Nigerian Pilot Sports in Abuja while dispelling rumours making rounds that he was considering a return to CAF or FIFA role equally stated that he has fully retired from any sporting administrative position both within and outside the country.
According to Adamu who headed the local organizing committee of 2003 All Africa Games now known as African Games maintained “Why will I desire to be appointed or elected into any position as a sports or football administrator at this age? I’m 64 and I’m satisfied with my achievements so far.
“How do you expect me to continue struggling for position? Most of the persons in various administrative positions were my subject, some I personally made sure they are where they are now, so how will go and start eyeing same post. Rather if I feel that what they are doing is not in line, I will go to them personally and advice and not to do so on the pages of newspapers or any other medium.
Adamu also sheared light on how he put a successful Games in Africa and was later accused of selling cars used for the competition by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC but later convinced them that the used vehicles were voluntarily donated by their owners.
He further disclosed; “the first Person to become a volunteer was Obasanjo, then the Vice President Atiku Abukakar. The essence was to pull the crowd needed to attract about 2500 volunteers who will help in one area or the other to make COJA successful because there was no specific budget for us to work with.
“Obasanjo entered the vehicle and became a volunteer driver and almost everyone wanted to enter the vehicle when they saw that the President was the driver.
“One of the things that helped us then was that I engaged professional in several fields. I didn’t have to involve myself with doing everything. When it came to construction of the various part of the Abuja National stadium, the minister of Works was in charge. But I was focused even when the then Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili wanted to delve into sports matters, I proved to her that bagging PHD in sports is not just anyone should toil with.
While lamenting the current poor state of Nigerian sports which he blamed on politicians and sports administrators’ lackluster attitude, Adamu equally disclosed that he worked with Ministers of Aviation and FCT who ensured that Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja was upgraded and that the roads leading to it was put in good shape.
