Adekunle Gold has emerged the winner of the Beat of Lagos 2015.
The singer scooped the award for his song ‘Sade,’ which was voted by residents of Lagos as the song that has the most impact on their playlists so far in the calendar year.
Adekunle got the award at the annual concert, which held on Sunday August 30, at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.
The singer came onstage to a rapturous reception by fans and received the honour. Another interesting reward which comes with the gong is a plot of land in Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos.
Last year the, ‘Beat of Lagos Award’ was introduced, an award that saw Lagosians voting on the website for the song that kept them dancing the most all year round. The hit single from the Mavin’s Crew, ‘Dorobucci,’ went home with the prestigious award. Adekunle, the winner of this year’s award, went home with a plot of land courtesy of Adron Homes.
On receiving the award, the singer was overjoyed. He said: “Rejection sometimes is a good thing. This song is my personal story of rejection. I have chased a girl for three years, and she rejected me. So I wrote the song ‘Sade’, to share the story. Thank God for this.”
The singer later went on to give a thrilling performance of ‘Sade’and his current buzzing single ‘Orente’.
Interestingly, Adekunle Gold beat his boss Olamide, to the award. The singer was signed to YBNL in 2014, and has since been on an upward journey to stardom.
The singer has been on a successful run with the release of two official singles ‘Sade’ and more recently ‘Orente.’
Adekunle who sings in Highlife with a mid-tempo pop twist, had earlier revealed how he got into the heart of Olamide, and subsequently, earning a record deal.
“I have been working with Olamide, I designed the YBNL logo, I have done a couple of designs for the label before I got signed.”Adekunle revealed.
“When I dropped Sade, Olamide apparently liked it, and the whole YBNL crew liked it. So he called me and said he really liked my sound, and didn’t want it to change, that he would love to work with me.
“I didn’t see it coming; I didn’t lobby for it, I didn’t do anything, I didn’t think about it at all.”
