NO LESS than 18-man Female Cricket contingent yesterday departed the shores of Nigeria to Dares Salam, Tanzania to be part of this year’s U-17 African female cricket championship which kicks off today.
The team is made up of 15 players and three officials. They would be led by team manager, Sowoolu Bimbo with Musa Cyril Aidelokhai as Head Coach, and assistant, Ajealu Tony Rodney.
Speaking shortly before their departure, Presidentm Nigeria Cricket Federation, Engr. Emeka Onyeama posited that the essence of ensuring that the Nigerian girls participate in the tournament after barely five years of absence was to expose for future gains.
Onyeama added, “I’m to confirm to you that we are committed to growing Cricket in the country. This is the foremost game introduced in this country and it since been resuscitated upon our take over two years ago.of our pitch is going on. In a couple of days, we are going to beef up activities and the whole Nigeria will see what we are doing. We will continue to work for cricket and make cricket grow from strength to strength.
“The continental cricket tournament is a wonderful invitation for our girls and we cannot wait to be there.”Nigeria will be up against Mumbai, Thailand and host Tanzania during the week long competition.
The girls were in camp for two weeks going through drills and training in preparation for the tournament.
The last time Nigeria presented a Female Cricket team outside the shores of the country was in 2011. Team list:
