The 27 athletics and eight coaches invited by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) are expected to hit camp today to firm up preparation ahead of the 2nd edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Youth Athletics Championship scheduled for Mauritius this April 23-26.
The athletes named by the AFN at the weekend consist of 15 boys and 12 girls.
However, there were fears that paucity of Fund may stop Team Nigeria from participating at the championship.
In a list released by the Technical Director of the federation, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, the girl’s athletes includes, Aniekeme Alphonsus, Abolaji Omotayo Oluwaseun for the 100m event while for 200m has Idamadudu Praise and Aniekeme Alphonsus. 400m; Idamadudu Praise and Adiakerenwa Blessing.
Also listed are 100m hurdles; Vivian Nnena Akunna and Okorhi Mary. 400m hurdles; Clifford Fegor and Abu Joy. Long Jump; Nwaelehia Peace and Okolosi Oghenekome. Triple Jump; Uche Brown. Race Walk; Olude Fadakemi Florenc.
For the boys 100m; Idjesa Uruemu and Nwokocha Tobechukwu will compete while the 200m have Itsekiri Usheoritse and Igube ThankGod. 400m; Adewale Sikiru Adewale and Afeez Abdulramon. 800m; Okeke Chidi. 110m hurdles; Ojeikere Omon and Ayebide Kingsley. 400m hurdles; Prior Ochonogor and Airen Williams.
Others are: Javelin; Ezekiel Nyong. High Jump; Ayebide Kingsley. Triple Jump; Pius Nsube Ihezue and Emmanuel Effiom. Long Jump; Nwokocha Tobechukwu and Pius Nsube Ihezue while Ayebide Kingsley will compete in the Decathlon event.
The Coaches selected are; Saheed Akinpelu (Middle Distance), Mrs Emily Osakwe (Horizontal Jumps), Abiodun Johnson (Long Sprints), Endurance Ojokolo (Short Sprints) and Chima Osuagwu (Hurdles), Oluwole Odunuga (Race Walk), Olalekan Soetan (Vertical Jumps) and George Obiano (Horizontal Jumps).
However, Nesiama started that due to the fact that most of the athletes selected are in school, the Technical Committee has directed that athletes would continue training at their locations until 20th April 2015 when they would be called up to assemble for the trip to Mauritius.
He added that those on the list can only attend the Championship subject to availability of fund.
