There was tension in Buguma community, headquarters of Asari_Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State yesterday, after supporters of the two rival political parties, All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP clashed, leading to the death of one person.
Though the cause of the clash was not immediately known at the time of filing this report, a source in the community who spoke with Nigerian Pilot said one person was killed and burnt immediately in the course of the fight.
Another source who spoke with this reporter gave the nickname of the victim as Kpom_Kpom. The source further stated that the clash occurred at the new Health Centre area built by the immediate past administration.
“We don’t really know what caused the fight but what we know is that it is a clash between the APC and PDP. There were series of gun shots so we had to take cover in our house. One guy popularly known as Kpom_Kpom who we think is an APC member was killed and burnt. As I speak with you, there is tension in Burma,” the source said.
This is coming barely 24 hours after gunmen killed an APC Ward Chairman, wife and son in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State also.
When contacted, Police spokesman in the state, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, confirmed the incident, but added that normalcy has returned to the area due to the swift response of security operatives that forestalled further breakdown of law and order.
There have been series of killings in Rivers State due to tension caused by the March 19 rerun elections for the state and national assemblies. Hardly a day passes in Rivers State without reported case of assassination or crisis related deaths.
Also, on Saturday night, unknown gunmen attacked and killed Mr. Franklin Obi, the All Progressives Congress APC Ward 4 Chairman in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.
The gunmen, who invaded Obi’ residence, along Rutachi Street, Ozomini, in Omoku about 9:00pm, also murdered his wife, Ihuoma Obi and their 18-year old son, Bestman. Nigerian Pilot learnt that the killers went ahead to behead the late Obi.
A source in the area who spoke to this medium said the attack must have been targeted at the APC ward chairman as no other house was attacked at the time.
He said: “A man, his wife and one of their children were attacked and killed late last night by unknown gunmen. The man, Mr Franklin Obi is the APC Ward 4 Chairman in ONELGA. He was killed at his residence at Ozomini area of Omoku.”
Speaking amid tears, the daughter to late Obi, Victory, who is about 16 years old, said they decided to hide somewhere in the room, from where they peeped through and saw how the gunmen were cutting off her father’s head.
She said: “Last night, I was inside when I heard my mum crying. We heard the sound of a gunshot. I opened the curtain of my room and I saw the men cutting off my father’s head.
“They (gunmen) then came to our room and ordered me and my brother to come out and as we were coming, my brother was moving slowly and they shot him. They then left with my father’s head.”
The State Police Commissioner, Mr. Musa Kimo, expressed sadness over the killing of the APC stalwart.
Kimo, who described the gruesome murder of the trio as sad, insane and totally unacceptable, called on the public to assist the police with useful information in order to apprehend those involved in the act.
He, however, said that investigation into the killings in Omoku, including Saturday’s murder of Franklin Obi, his wife and son, was ongoing, adding that the police was not relenting in ensuring that those behind the dastardly act are arrested and brought to book.
Meanwhile, the APC has described as shocking the gruesome murder of its Ward chairman in Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
APC, in a statement issued by its publicity secretary, Chris Finebone, said: “The killing of Franklyn Obi is shocking. It goes to support what we long knew that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been responsible for all the killings in ONELGA. Now, make your own deductions.
“Late Franklyn Obi was the APC Ward 4 chairman, he managed and moderated the ONELGA APC meeting last Thursday in Omoku and by Saturday, he was killed and beheaded while his wife and son were killed. The state PDP chairman, Bro. Felix Obuah comes from the same Ward 4. So, make your own deductions.”
