At least, one person was confirmed dead, after the personnel of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, rescued three, following a collision midstream of two vessels, the MT Elixir and MT Tank.
The incident which occurred about 65 miles from shore and just 10 nautical miles south west of the Bonga FPSO near Warri, has subsequently attracted several divers and other Search And Rescue, SAR, personnel to the site, trying to save eight remaining crew, still trapped in the MT. Tank..
Preliminary reports show that the incident occurred at about 12 midnight on Monday 19th October 2015 and that MT Tank got so broken in the process, that it began taking in water, almost immediately.
A sad and depressed Acting Director General of the Agency, Mr. Haruna Baba Jauro has in the meantime, directed a comprehensive rescue operation alongside a thorough investigation, into the incident to ascertain the remote and immediate causes.
The Acting DG grieved over the loss of life occasioned by the incident urging crew members to exercise more caution in navigation especially around terminals.
The three rescued crew members were receiving treatment at Twins Clinic Warri at the behest of NIMASA while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary.
