Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, will tomorrow appear before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters over the ongoing forgery case that his office instituted against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, and two others.
Malami was earlier scheduled for appearance before the committee last week Thursday after the Senate’s resolution to that effect penultimate Tuesday through a motion sponsored by Senator Dino Melaye on the forgery case which was described as an imminent threat to our democracy.
Melaye accused the AGF of contempt for revisiting a matter that had already been declared as an internal affair of the Senate by a competent court of jurisdiction in Abuja, last year.
According to him, “the judiciary had through several rulings in a recent case suit, AFC/ABJ/CS/646/2015 on the same issue warned the executive arm against criminalising or interfering in the running of the internal affairs of the Senate.”
Consequently, the AGF as declared by the Senate last week, would before its committee, explain and justify with evidence the basis for his action and why it does not constitute gross misconduct, incompetence, contempt of court and abuse of office.
But that was not to be with the non-appearance of Malami upon his request for adjournment through a letter to that effect.
However, the AGF, as stated in a new letter of invitation to him by the committee’s Chairman, David Umaru (APC Niger-East), dated June 27, is expected to appear before the committee tomorrow at 12 noon prompt in room 313.
The letter reads in part: “I write with reference to your correspondence on the above subject matter with Ref. HAGF/NASS/ZOIG/Voi.1/24, dated June 23 whereby you requested for an adjournment of the meeting of the committee, which was supposed to hold on Thursday, June 23 to enable you prepare your response. The committee has considered your request and having regard to the reason adduced, acceded to the request for an adjournment.
“Accordingly, the meeting is now scheduled to hold on Thursday, June 30 at 12 noon prompt. The venue is the Senate Meeting Room 313, third floor, New Senate Building, National Assembly Complex. You are by this letter invited to appear before the committee on the date and time mentioned above”
