Kaduna State Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Manzo Daniel Maigari, yesterday said Nigeria will have no future if it fails to develop its agricultural sector.
This was as he called on the youths to be productive and intensify their efforts in agricultural production in order to eradicate hunger in the country.
Speaking yesterday at a rally commemorating the World Food Day 2015 organised by the Arewa Young Farmers Initiative, AYFI in collaboration with Kaduna State government, the Commissioner said he is always happy to see young men and women in the state picking interest in farming and going all the way to make it a profession.
“I urge the youths to be productive and to intensify their efforts in agricultural production in order to eradicate hunger. In truth, Nigeria will have no future without developing its agricultural sector. So, whenever I see young people having interest in farming, it is always very pleasing to me.
“ I feel happier whenever I see them going all the way to make it a profession. When the youths take farming as a profession it gives us hope about agriculture in this country because presently our farmers are aging and in the next 25-50 years, most of them will be no more.
“With youth going into farming the future is bright and safe. I can therefore boldly say that there is no tangible development in Nigeria besides and Nigeria will have no meaningful development besides it. Moreover, agriculture provides job opportunities to teaming youth globally,” he said.
According to him, the state government has good plans to boost agriculture, including plans to train youth on different agricultural activities in order to bring hunger to the barest minimum.
In his remarks, the AYFI Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Salisu, said Agriculture was Nigeria’s major source of income before the oil boom, stressing that it has the capacity of providing job opportunities to over 70 per cent of Nigeria youth.
Salisu also said 60 per cent of Cultivable land area in Nigeria is yet to be utilised, noting that the present administration in the country and in the state has shown signs of giving priority to agriculture.
He added that the Kaduna State Government under the able leadership of Governor Nasir El-Rufai has made them to understand that there is a special package for people willing to embrace agriculture as a means of survival and as a means of wealth creation.
