Akwa Ibom State Government has commenced the payment of compensation to owners of properties on the Uyo- Etinan highway dualisation project.
The exercise which began last week at Ikot Oku- Ikono covered buildings, structures and crops that fell within the alignment of the road construction project.
State commissioner for works, Mr. Ephraim Inyang-Eyen told property owners on the road that Governor Udom Emmanuel did not have any intention to abandon the project; as against insinuations by the opposition.
Inyang explained that the delay in the construction of the road was as a result of project alignment which affected about 40 metres of the Asan Ibibio premises.
The Commissioner commended the people of Uyo and Etinan Local Government Areas for cooperating with the Government and for not erecting illegal structures for the purpose of compensations and assured of speedy take off of the road project.
While presenting cheques to the affected property owners and cash to crop owners, he urged them to make judicious use of the resourses and to relocate to new site for the smooth construction work in the area.
An indigene of the area, Chief Linus Usen, expressed satisfaction on the Government’s commitment to the construction of a dual carriage way with drainage on both sides, as well as solar streetlight and a flyover at Ikot Oku Ikono junction.
