The chilling, but revealing interview granted by the First Lady, Aisha Buhari to the BBC (Hausa Service) is still roughling some feathers within and outside the Aso Rock Villa. While some of the revelations by the First Lady came as a surprise to top government officials; the outburst merely restated the ill feelings and bitterness many members of the party are hitherto going through.
Of course, a good number of the party faithful that worked for the success of the APC in the 2015 Presidential election are still licking their wounds of not being carried along. Before now, quite a few of them have been speaking in hush tones, while many others simply buttoned up their tantrums waiting for the right moment to come out of their shelves.
In the interview, which will remain an instrument of attack use by the opposition party, Aisha Buhari bluntly said her husband is no longer in control of government; she pointed out that some cabals, who don’t even have voters card now call the shots. She expressed bitterness that her husband do not know most of the appointees in government today, stressing that unless things change, she will not campaign for Buhari in 2019.
This frank talk by the First Lady brings us to what the Senate President, Bukola Saraki earlier said that there is a government within government of President Muhammadu Buhari. He alleged that the cabals have seized the apparatus of executive powers to pursue their nefarious agenda. The Senate President said what is going right now portends danger for Nigeria’s democracy.
According to him, “What has become clear is that there is now a government within the government of President Buhari who have seized the apparatus of executive powers to pursue their nefarious agenda.”
Interestingly, Aisha’s interview has made nonsense of the initial denial by the presidency that there was no cabal in Buhari’s government.
Even the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Timi Frank, has said recent comments made by Aisha Buhari, are indeed true reflection of the feelings among many party members. While arguing that the wife of the president deserves commendation, the APC spokesman urged Buhari to act fast and correct some of the issues currently threatening the existence of the party.
“I think Mrs. Buhari deserves commendation because she is actually speaking the minds of not only the party members, but Nigerians.
“What Mrs. Buhari has said is not different from what some of us have been saying that it is high time the president shook up his cabinet and brought in people who understand the manifestoes of the party and can help the party deliver on its change mantra, especially in the area of the economy of the country which needs urgent attention.
“Some of our leaders like the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, have made this same observation in the past and I think they meant well for the administration and the country. I will also join them in appealing to the president to do the needful.
“Nigerian women in politics and other wives of president in the world have a lot to learn from what Mrs. Buhari has done.
“We should not forget in a hurry that this is what the former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan failed to do to her husband when few people hijacked his government and brought the government down,” Frank stated.
Nigerians have hailed Aisha Buhari for taking such a bold step in spite of the possible damages it could pose to the party in 2019. They, however, said the First Lady should have gone a step forward to name these faceless cabals constituting serious threat to Nigeria’s fledgling democracy.
Again, the ongoing political trial of Saraki and the brazen as well as the lawless manner the EFCC and the DSS go about infringing on the rights of its fellow citizens in the name of arrest has further lend credence to the fact that there are indeed cabals in the running of Buhari’s government.
The fact that both government agencies have been progressing in error without cautioning by the chief law enforcement officer of the land and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who should know best clearly shows that this government is on a mission to witch-hunt its perceived political enemies.
Unfortunately, this is not the change Buhari and the APC government promised Nigerians. In fact, it is just like taking one step forward and three steps backward.
The party, which promised change for the better, is already in disarray. Political analyst have said the lack of internal democracy in party will surely be its albatross come 2019.
At this point, one is tempted to ask: Amidst all these, has Buhari shown that he really belongs to all and belongs none as he profess? Has he asserted his authority within the confines of the constitution in dealing with some topical national issues threatening the unity of the country?
Nigerians are running out of patience and it is only a matter of time before the bubble will boost.
Who are these faceless cabals? Will the party disintegrate before 2019 in view of the discordant tones among members? Will Aisha Buhari come out with another bombshell?
Now is the auspicious time to fight these cabals not only undermining our hard earned democracy, but also taking us back to Egypt.
Moreover, Buhari must begin to assert his authority as the executive president of this country. He should take charge of his government and deal with these cabals accordingly. Allowing the so-called cabals to be in control and be calling the shots clearly shows that he is mentally and physically weak to run the affairs of this great nation.
