Most residents of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, did not comply with the directive by Governor Udom Emmanuel to observe a three-day dry fasting for the success of the new administration and prosperity of the state.
Nigerian Pilot correspondent who monitored compliance around the city reports that residents were going about their business unmindful of the directive.
Major eateries and fast food joints in the city also recorded normal influx of customers while activities at the major markets in the city remained normal.
There was also no sign of the observance in churches around the town, although subdued atmosphere at the residence of the governor and the Government House was suggestive that such a thing was taking place.
Some residents described the fasting and prayer directive as commendable but nonetheless expressed doubt over their participation.
“It is a good thing but we have been praying and fasting for the state and country all this while but then the politicians will not remember us when they start looting our money. I don’t think I will participate because I have to run around to get something for my family because this is Monday,” Mrs Grace Umoh told Nigerian Pilot.
It would be recalled that Emmanuel had declared a three-day fasting for people in the state to pray for peace and good governance last Sunday during a thanksgiving and re-dedication of the new administration.
“Let us love one another and let us share God’s goodness with each other irrespective of ethnic group or religion or political. We must remain worthy of God’s love, for as God releases his love to us, we must also release the same to all of humanity.”
On the purpose of the thanksgiving service, the governor said that the “good people of Akwa Ibom entered into a covenant with my humble self and graciously invested in my mortal hands the responsibilities of the office of the Governor of our dear state.
“Fully cognisant of the enormous responsibilities of the said office and the high expectations of the good people of our dear state, we are gathered today to surrender the instruments of leadership of this state to the Almighty God,” he asserted.
