Governor Umaru. Tanko Al-makura of Nasarawa State has Flagged off community base sanitation exercise in Mararaba area of Karu local government to evacuate huge refuse flagging off the exercise, Al-makura said the initiative was part of his administration’s policy to involve communities in governance to achieve results in the discharge of government activities.
He said the sanitation initiative would be sustained before the federal government intervention as the state being a gateway to the Federal Capital Territory, cannot afford to be dirty.
Al-Makura urged residents of the area to assist government in ensuring that the exercise was a success and to also monitor those causing environmental pollution by reporting them to the appropriate authorities.
He further reiterated his call to the federal government to extend the Ogoni clean-up exercise to states bordering the FCT because of population explosion from the capital city.
The governor who was in company of the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Usman Ibrahim Jibrin and other state government officials, urged residents to see the menace of indiscriminate refuse dumping as collective and not government affairs alone.
Speaking during the ceremony, chairman of the Tippers and Truck Association, Alhaji Garba Namakkah and his Traders association counterpart, Alhaji Baba Ali assured of their support for the success of the initiative and that the five earmarked dumping sites would be maintained.
