INCIDENCES of rape in Ebonyi
State have assumed an alarming
proportion such that hardly does
a day pass by without a reported
case of sexual violation of both
minors and adults alike.
In fact, the situation is such that
should a day goes by without a
reported case the police would
assume that something must
have gone amiss.
Friday Magazine takes a look
at just the month of March alone
which recorded an average of
12 reported cases per week as
confirmed by the Ebonyi State
Police Command.
For instance, on the 7th of
March, the Ebonyi State Police
Command arrested a 29-year-old
Pastor, David Ibe of the Christ
Command Mission, Onicha
Igboeze, in Onicha Council Area
of Ebonyi State, for allegedly
raping a 23-year-old girl,
Nnennaya Okute.
According to the Police, the
Pastor committed the illicit
act over the weekend, in an
uncompleted building in the
area, noting that the victim hails
from Amaokwe community in
the same local government.
The case was confirmed by
the State Police Public Relations
Officer, PPRO, George Okafor,
who disclosed that the suspect
was in police custody at the
headquarters of the state Police
Command in Abakaliki.
The PPRO said, “The
suspect lured his victim into
an uncompleted building at
Oruagha Umuobunna Uburu,
where he raped her at about
9:30p.m. He is an impostor, he
is among those who claim to be

“They are the horrible types
that pretend to be human beings
and you will never know that
you are actually dining with the
devil,” Okafor stated and added
that during interrogation, the
suspect confessed to the crime,
claiming that the girl refused to
marry him after he had invested
so much money on her.
“It is a terrible situation and
this is the type we want to get at,
so that others like him will learn.
Imagine what the flock under
him will do if someone who said
that he is a man of God can go
this way?” the PPRO asked.
Two days later, (March 9)
security operatives confirmed
another major case of rape, this
time operatives said that they
were embarking on a manhunt
for a rapist who forcefully had
carnal knowledge of one Chioma
Mgbada at gun point.
Giving the name of the
suspected rapist, as Sunday
Obaji, the State Police Command,
George Okafor, said he raped his
victim at Effium community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area
of the state.
Okafor said, “On the 7th of March,
2016, one Mgbada Chioma from
Effium community, Ohaukwu local
government reported to the Police
that at about 2 am in the morning,
one Sunday Obaji, entered her
bed room, pointed gun at her and
threatened to kill her if she raised
“In the process, Sunday Obaji
tore her dress and had unlawful
carnal knowledge of her and after,
“The matter is under
investigation, and the suspect is
on the run; we are trying to trace
him to wherever we can, he cannot
run for long” Okafor said and then
appealed that “The community
should assist in producing him
because they know him very well.”
The police stated that incidences
of rape could be drastically reduced
if the community assists them to
fish out rapists adding that females
could also help reduce cases of
rape by taking extra-cautionary
measures against lucid sexual acts
and thus preempt irresponsible
“He is a native of the community;
even if he escaped from the
community, they have to fish him
out. He must be punished and we
are calling on this community to
do something immediately and
produce this suspect.”
Okafor also reiterated the resolve
of the police to fight the scourge
of violence against women to a
standstill in the state.
“We are talking about violence
against women and this is one of
such violence. Wherever this man
is, we must fish him out.”
Few days later, the police arrested
two men, including a Pastor, over
alleged rape cases.
And on the 14th of March,
security operatives apprehended
one 26- year-old man, identified as
Anyigor Lawrence, for unlawfully
having canal knowledge of a fellow
man through the anus without his
Speaking on the incident, Okafor
said, “there was a report from
Effium Police Station that one
Kenneth Nweke reported that
at about 1:30am, one Anyigor
Lawrence of about 26 years from
neighbouring Benue State, but
resides in Effium community,
Ebonyi State, unlawfully had canal
knowledge of him through the anus
without his consent.
“The victim is currently on
admission at the Federal Teaching
Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA and
investigations are ongoing,” the
PPRO said adding that the suspect

allegedly raping two minor siblings
in a church.
The duo, Nnaemeka Nnamani
and Chiemerie Nnamani, were
alleged to have lured the two
minors identified as Favour and
Uloma to a corner in the church and
had carnal knowledge of them.
George Okafor, said, “the
children’s parents are living around

the suspects currently serves as a
Further, the PPRO said that “a
medical report showed that the
two children were defiled and the
matter is already in court,”
A resident of the area, Igwe Moses,
confirmed the incident stating that,
“It is not just defiling these children
aged 7 and 9 respectively, they have
committed a sacrilege.
“They lured the minors to a
corner of the church and raped
them. This is very bad. How
would someone whose father
has been preaching against such
ungodly acts not learn anything
“This is discretion of the
church,” Moses added, stressing
that they have sinned against
God and man for defiling these
innocent children.
The cases clearly showed that
rape cuts across all ages and sexes
as the various instances involved
sodomy, abuse of minors and
adults alike. It’s also indicated
that no place is too sacred for use
by the sexually immoral persons.
Interestingly, Friday Magazine
recalls that the Department For
International Development,
DFID funded Sexual Assault and
Referral Centre, Tamar, SARC,
Enugu, has raised the alarm over
high rate of violence rape cases
in South East, Nigeria, saying
it has so far recorded no fewer
than 320 abuses within one year
of its establishment. That was
September last year.
The organisation is
managed by an Enugu based
nongovernmental organization,
NGO Women Aid Collective,
WACOL, and financed by the
Justice for All (J4A) of the DFID.
Presenting the statistical data
during a meeting, Manager
of Tamar SARC, Miss Nkechi
Nwabueze, observed that the
figure reflected only the few
cases, reported to the office,
adding that many cases are not
She disclosed that out of the
figure, 84 cases are minors below
five years, 102 adolescent, 114
youths, 22 adults, while six were
old people.
Listing a particular case that
was successfully prosecuted
in law court, she said that the
perpetrator is currently serving a
14 year jail term.
“Our children and our youths

violence, and its consequences to
the society”.
She added that out of the 320
cases recorded at the center,
only 27 were charged to court,
saying “this low record was due
to parents and victims’ culture
of silence and reluctance to seek
legal redress.
