An Abuja-based Gynaecologist, Dr Kola Osibote, said alcoholism is the leading cause of female sexual disorder.
Osibote, who made the information known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja on Tuesday, also said that the lack of sex drive was more common in women than men.
He, however, said the condition could be corrected as it was more of a psychological disorder.
According to him, lack of sexual urge in some women can be temporary, adding that they can get over the challenge themselves or with the help of psychosexual assistance.
He said statistics had indicated that 700 out of 1,000 women experience lack of libido in their life time.
The doctor said although women with such disorders never have problem with orgasm, they lack real desire for sex.
“Loss of iron during menstruation and diseases such as diabetes, could lead to loss of sexual appetite in women. Post-baby coolness that happens after childbirth due to hormonal changes contributes to lack of sex drive. General trauma of childbirth also plays a part and after having a baby, many women are too exhausted to think about sex,’’ Osibote said.
He added that some drugs, such as tranquillisers, as well as abnormalities in the production of luteinising hormone could also reduce sex drive in women.
According to him, when a woman is having a bad time emotionally she lacks interest in sex. Other factors are stress, depression, anxiety, rape, latent lesbianism, as well as childhood problems.
Osibote, however, said menopause does not reduce libido as many women could “become sex hungry and have more orgasms during the postmenopausal part of their lives’’.
Osibote advised those experiencing sexual disorder–lack of libido, to engage in activities that could arouse sexual urge.
He listed such activities to include foreplay which increases blood flow to the vagina and the clitoris and results in increased desire for sex.
Osibote also noted that drugs that contain ingredients similar to the physical touch which also produces that tingly sensation in the clitoris could be used to arouse sexual urge. (NAN)
