FORMER PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo and immediate past governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Ameachi are in trouble. They are pitched against the government of Rivers State for defaulting in payment of ground rent. The government has vowed to revoke such landed property if they decline payment within a stipulated period. Both men are among 376 individuals and companies owing Rivers State government ground rent running into several millions of naira. Others include, Gen. TY Danjuma, Gen. JT Useni, former acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus; former Governor Celestine Omehia; Agip Oil ltd and a host of top Nigerians and companies. Checks by the Nigerian Pilot Sunday revealed that the government has given a grace period of 14 days to the debtors to pay, failing which Governor Nyesom Wike would revoke and cancel all interests in the said property. A notice now in the public domain and titled ‘Land Use
Act Cap L5 Lfn 2004; Notice of Government Intention to Revoke Rights of Occupancy for Failure to Pay Ground Rent’, made public by the Rivers Ministry of lands and Survey, noted that the defaulters, risk revocation of their properties located in choice areas of the state. “The governor of Rivers State shall revoke/cancel all interests in the properties without delay if this notice is not complied with” the notice singed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Land Matters, Sir, Anugbum Onuoha, further stated.
No less than 376 defaulters, which comprise individuals, companies, owe the state government hundred millions of naira. For instance, former President Obasanjo, with file No; RSL/6266 and landed property located on Plot 93 Diobu GRA Phase 2, measuring 3,351m2 /LDR/ PHALGA/OBIO LGR;2001, owes N1,484,579 as ground rent and penalty payable for default . Same as Gen. TY Danjuma; File no; RSL: 3193, with plot located on 277 Diobu GRA phase 2; measuring 2,791m2:/LDR// PHALGA/OBIO LGR; 1992, who owes N1, 268,553 both for ground rent and penalty. For former Rivers governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi his plot is located on No 124 Trans Amadi GRA with area, 2,377m2/LDR/PHALGA/OBIO LGR, allocated in 2003 and owes land rent of N1, 039,523. Amaechi is current Nigeria Minister of Transport and has file no; RSL/42412. Nigeria Agip Oil Company Ltd alone owes N151, 713,936 million in a land located at Obie Obirikon with size of 269,800m2/HIN/LGA HQTR LGR: 1991.
