A renewed communal clash between Ologba and Egba communities of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State has claimed 45 lives.
It would be recalled that 82 people were earlier killed in March in Egba, when Fulani herdsmen invaded the community.
The state Commissioner of Police, Hycinth Dagala when contacted confirmed 23 dead bodies, saying he was yet to get further update on the crisis.
Dagala explained that the villagers had been fighting over a fish pond.
He added that the renewed crisis followed suspicion by the Egba community that the Ologba people had organised the recent deadly Fulani invasion against them.
John Ngbede, former Commissioner for Works in the state who hails from the area, told the Nigerian Pilot Sunday that the communities had a long standing dispute over the fish pond.
Ngbede explained that many people were injured following the crisis which started Friday evening , adding that some of the victims are presently taking refuge in Ogbagaji, the headquarter of the Local Government Area.
