New Sports Minister, Barr Solomon Dalung will this week begin an intensive inspection of Sports facilities across the country with a view to getting firsthand information on their level of workability.
Dalung who made this known in Abuja noted that already he has directed various federations as well as Directors within the National Sports Commission, NSC to prepare for a face to face interaction on how activities have been taking place over the years.
The sports minister further asserted that he would ensure equitable attention on all sports in a bid to harness budding potentials in Nigeria even as he was of the view that ex-internationals and players in different sports should lead the way in mentoring the young ones.
He added: “I think we should give sports a holistic approach. This idea of concentrating only on football and placing football against other sports is not in the interest of this country.
“It is one of the reasons why majority of those who would have natural or have the talent to participate in other sports are discouraged and because they cannot play football, then frustration will also have stepped in.
“I am per say not a footballer but I am a hockey player. Now I have asked the DG, can I have my hockey stick? And where is the hockey field? Because I would love to go there and start the training which I left so many years ago, but I know the moment I play one, two times, I will pick up. I will do that because I want hockey too to come up.”
