• May Re zone Speaker to North East
  • Buhari to reward Amaechi, Kwankwaso for campaign funding

MIFFED by what is becoming
the domineering influence
of former governor of Lagos
State and National Leader of
the All Progressives Congress,
APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,
some leaders of the party have
concluded plans to cut him to
size for allegedly rejecting the
current zoning arrangements
of the party.
Though APC had denied
media reports that it has
zoned some sensitive National
Assembly positions, there are
strong indications that the
party may be economical with
the truth on what transpired
at its last National Working
Committee, NWC meeting.
In a statement by its National
Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, yesterday in
Abuja, APC urged Nigerians to
ignore the media speculations
of any zoning.
He said: “The All
Progressives Congress,
APC, has urged Nigerians to
disregard the wild speculations
making the rounds concerning
the appointment of ministers
and the zoning of offices
under the incoming Buhari
‘’No appointments have
been made and no offices have
been zoned. The main concern
of our party at the moment is
to ensure a smooth transition
and to hit the ground running,
in the overall interest of
the longsuffering people of
Nigeria. At the appropriate
time, Nigerians will be informed of the appointments
made and the offices zoned,’’
APC said
However, key insiders have put
a lie to Mohammed’s statement,
insisting that with the current
zoning arrangement, Tinubu
has the upper hand and this has
not gone down well with many
party stakeholders.
The party is believed to have
zoned the Senate President to
the North-Central, Speaker to
the South-West, Senate Leader to
the South-West and the Deputy
Senate President to the North-
East and Deputy Speaker to the
By this zoning arrangement,
Tinubu is said to have
positioned George Akume
and Femi Gbajabiamila for
Senate President and Speaker,
respectively, with the Senate
Leader set to be another of his
own from the South-West.
Expectedly, other ranking
members of the APC are fighting
back thereby raising speculations
that the party may be hamstrung
into re-zoning the Speaker of
the House of Representatives
to either North-East or South-
A prominent northerner and a
close confidant of the presidentelect,
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari,
who came from the defunct
Congress for Progressive
Change, CPC wing of the APC,
confided in Nigerian Pilot
yesterday that they are opposing
the current zoning arrangement
because it has apparently given
undue advantage to the Action
Congress of Nigeria, ACN more
than any other of the legacy
The Buhari’s ally, who pleaded
anonymity, frowned at how
Tinubu has been allowed to run
the party the way he handled the
defunct ACN and vowed that
the CPC members of the APC
would resist it.
He said: “After the election,
you can see that the CPC wing of
the party has many governorselect
and many members of the
National Assembly unlike in
2011 and this has given us a lot
of confidence. If we allow the
current zoning arrangement as
proposed by the NWC to stand,
it means that those of us from
the CPC would be pushed into
irrelevance and the presidentelect
“You can see that the APC
National Chairman is ACN,
the Vice President is also ACN,
if Akume becomes the Senate
President, that is another CAN;
if the Speaker is allowed to
come from the South-West, it is
automatically another ACN and
then the Senate Leader another
ACN. That is an overkill and
the president-elect may not be
able to do anything without the
approval of the leader of ACN
and this will not be in the best
interest of the poor masses of
Nigerians who risked everything
to effect this change. But one
thing I can assure you is that
we will resist it, we will shoot it
down, no matter what it takes,”
he vowed.
Buhari to reward Amaechi,
Kwankwaso for campaign
Meanwhile, Buhari is set to
reward Rivers State Governor,
Rotimi Amaechi and his Kano
State counterpart, Rab’iu
Kwankwaso with ministerial
appointments for funding
his campaigns and solidarity
leading to his victory at the
March 28 presidential election.
Although, Amaechi did not
deliver his state to Buhari at the
polls, the president-elect has
allegedly resolved to reward
him for the huge resources he
deployed into his campaigns.
Amaechi, apart from allegedly
releasing huge funds into the
APC presidential campaigns,
gave the state aircraft for
Buhari’s use throughout the
campaign period.
Nigerian Pilot however, learnt
that Buhari is not comfortable
with Amaechi’s insistence
that he should be appointed
the Minister of Petroleum
In the case of Kwankwaso,
it was learnt that Buhari was
shocked with the 1.9milion votes
that the governor mobilised
for him from Kano State. The
president-elect got the highest
number of votes from Kano.
Buhari, it was further learnt,
was moved by Kwankwaso’s
solidarity despite losing the APC
primaries to him. The governor
came second in the Presidential
primaries won by Buhari.
Consequently, Buhari has
allegedly resolved to make
Kwankwaso the Minister of the
Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
Already, Kwankwaso has
been elected a Senator for the
8th National Assembly. There
are strong indications that he
may take the ministerial offer
whenever Buhari names his
