National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday alleged that the controversial former chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is being sponsored by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the presidency to destabilise the party ahead of the Edo governorship election.
Reacting to the forceful takeover of the party national secretariat by Modu Sheriff on Monday, the PDP Caretaker Committee said, it has incontrovertible evidence that Modu Sheriff was contracted by APC to unleash crisis in the PDP.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the new Spokesman of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said last Sunday, PDP leaders got wind of the plot by Modu Sheriff to storm the party secretariat and alerted the police but the police caved in due to orders from above.
“When rumours of the planned invasion filtered out on Sunday, we took steps to alert the police to secure the building and to protect the lives and properties of members. Up to a point, the police discharged their responsibilities satisfactorily.
“However, later on without any justification whatsoever, Ali Modu Sheriff and the other renegades were allowed to gain entry into the secretariat, where they later proceeded to address a press conference.
“While we are still trying to understand the role of the police in the entire saga, it is curious that the police made no arrest of the thugs who openly brandished various dangerous weapons in and around the premises of the secretariat in full glare of the police.
“It is also curious that the police claimed to be acting on “Orders from above” in allowing Sheriff and his cohorts to gain entry into the secretariat. If we may ask, who is the authority that issued the “Orders from above”?
“What we are however very certain about is that Sheriff and his fellow renegades are being used by the enemies of the PDP to destroy the party and to prevent it from reorganising itself, so as to provide a credible opposition and alternative platform for the forthcoming Edo State Gubernatorial election and 2019 elections.
“The All progressives Congress, APC, has contracted Sheriff and his cohorts to scuttle the chances of the PDP in the Edo governorship elections.
“We have credible intelligence that Sheriff had a meeting on Sunday night with an APC governor from the North West, where it was organised that he would be given full security and financial support to exacerbate the crisis in the PDP with the objective of preventing the PDP from presenting a candidate for the Edo governorship elections, or in the very least to prevent the PDP from offering a serious challenge to APC whose electoral fortunes has continued to nose- dive.”
The Caretaker committee assured supporters in Edo state in particular, and Nigeria in general, that the party will take all necessary measures to prevent the party from being hijacked by those he described as political merchants.
“The process for the election of the PDP governorship candidate in Edo State commenced yesterday with the peaceful and successful conduct of the ward congresses for the election of 3- ad hoc delegates.
“We urge party officials who are involved in the conduct of the remaining exercises to remain focused and dedicated to their responsibilities.
“We are determined to produce a credible and strong candidate who by the grace of God, will win the Edo Governorship election.
Prince Adeyeye further alleged that Senator Sheriff was economical with the truth when he claimed that the court order that stopped him from parading himself as the chairman of the party has lapsed.
“Senator Sheriff gave the false impression that he has court orders that empower him to continue as National chairman of the PDP. Despite his bravado, he did not display or made available the courts orders to the gentlemen of the press.
“The truth of the matter is that Senator Sheriff has no court orders to back his claims. He and his cohorts continue to shop around to buy any court order at any price, but so far they have not succeeded, thanks to the vigilance and integrity of the judiciary.
“The Federal High Court in suit NO FHC/ PH/CS/524/2016 has endorsed the decisions of the National convention held in Port Harcourt on 21/05/16.
“The order of the Federal High Court presided over by Justice A.M Liman is still subsisting and has not elapsed contrary to the insinuation of Senator Ali Sheriff. The order will subsist until the determination of the motion on Notice. The motion on notice will come up for hearing on Thursday.”
Prince Adeyeye maintained that the National caretaker committee is not distracted by the activities of those he described as “the fifth columnists in the party.”

APC denies sponsoring Modu Sheriff
Meanwhile, National secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, APC, last night described as “baseless and laughable” allegations that the party and the Presidency Are sponsoring Ali Modu Sherrif to destabilize the party.
APC said through its national secretary,
Mai Mala Buni that we PDP that it is suffering from its sins of the past.
“For the umpteenth time, the APC wishes to state that instead of joining issues with the baseless and laughable allegations, the APC would rather join issues that will bring about all-inclusive development in the country.
“However, it should be put on record that the PDP forced on them whatever crisis it is troubled with today due to its politics of imposition and other undemocratic practices which the APC abhors.
“The PDP should put its house in order rather than playing to the gallery and blaming others but themselves for their sins which has come to hunt them.
“Also, it is evident that the PDP has chosen to employ diversionary tactics because of its inability to produce credible candidates for the forthcoming elections in Edo and Ondo states.”
