syliaCrisis the in the highly divided All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Bayelsa State further deepened as the suspended leadership of the state executives on Saturday also suspended former governor and immediate past gubernatorial candidate of the party, Chief Timipre Sylva.
State chairman of the party, Timipa Tiwei Orunimighe and the secretary, Daniel Marlin, who were only Friday suspended for alleged anti-party activities and financial impropriety, announced the suspension of Chief Sylva in Abuja yesterday in what many onlookers described as dangerous signals that all is not well with the APC in Bayelsa State.
On Friday, 21 members of the state executive had announced the indefinite suspension of the State Chairman,Chief Tiwei Orunimigha, his Deputy, Eddy Julius and the Secretary, Daniel Marlin.
The suspension, according to the party, was because of alleged cases of gross misconduct, financial embezzlement and anti-Party activities.
The decision, according to the 21 members, was taken at the end of an emergency meeting in Yenagoa. The members declared the former Central Senatorial District Vice Chairman, Joseph Fafi and Alabo Martins as the interim chairman and secretary respectively.
This was contained in the statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Hon Panebi Fortune, and it stated that “ At an emergency State Executive Committee meeting held today 1st of April, 2016 the following were reached that the cases of gross misconduct, financial embezzlement and anti-Party activity against the State Chairman, Chief Tiwei Orunimighe, the Deputy Chairman, Eddy Julius and State Secretary, Daniel Marlin.
“The State Chapter of the party, this day therefore has placed the aforementioned individuals on indefinite suspension, pending the conclusion of investigations.”
It would be recalled that some factions of the APC in the state, led by the party Chairman, Chief Tiwei Orunimighe had on Tuesday slammed the party’s candidate in the last governorship election in the state, Chief Timipre Silva, for allegedly sidelining the leadership and trying to corner federal appointments due to the state for only his cronies.
But supporters of Chief Sylva especially members of the State Working Committee led by the Organising Secretary, Sir Tonye Okio and the only elected member of the State House of Assembly of the APC, Hon Israel Sunny-Igoli dismissed the claims against Chief Timipre Sylva.
Instead, they accused the suspended leaders of anti-party antics and blackmail for appointments. Hon Sunny-Igoli, who represents Brass Constituency 1, in the state assembly, said the party was fed up with these characters and would no longer tolerate them.
“Chief Sylva has never negotiated with anybody for appointments and he has remained a trusted and dependable leader,” he said.
