Six contestants of the Rivers State House of Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have said that they will not participate in the rescheduled election, slated to hold on Saturday, April 18.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Dame Gesila Khan had declared elections in six constituencies of the state, including, Etche I, Etche II, Emohua, Ahoada East I, Ahoada East II, and Opobo/Nkoro, inconclusive over election violence during the April 11 elections.
Addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt on behalf of the contestants, Friday evening, Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly who is seeking to represent Emohua constituency for the fourth time, Hon Chidi Lloyd, said they have decided to boycott the elections because they lack confidence in the REC.
Lloyd, who informed that there was no formal communication by the INEC in the state to the APC on the rescheduled elections, further stated that a suit seeking to restrain INEC from conducting the election is already pending before a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.
He accused Dame Khan of canceling the elections in those constituencies because the APC had won, saying that it will be contempt of court if the REC goes ahead to conduct the elections.
According to him, there are no local and international observers to monitor the elections and therefore the process cannot be transparent.
He said: “We have no confidence in the impartiality of INEC and in the ability of INEC to conduct a credible free and fair election with the very fresh terrible experienced on March 28 and April 11, 2015.
