Following reports of intimation and witch hunt of political opponents by the APC-led federal government, the intellectual arm of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA Think-tank, has condemned the alleged plot to silence opposition in the country.
Reacting to the recent arrest of Chief Victor Ume, the group said in a statement that it is to the best interest of the current administration that Nigeria should have a virile opposition in the country.
The statrement reads: “We, at the APGA Think-Tank, Nigeria decry the lack of virile opposition in our democracy. We also condemn attempts by the APC Government to intimidate rival political parties and politicians, who may hold different views from the present administration, using the State Security apparatus.
“We will remind the ruling APC Government, that it is to the best interest of the current administration that Nigeria should have a virile opposition in the democracy, suggesting alternative views vital to our politics, economics and social welfare.
“The APC cannot deny the importance of an ideas exchange in our democracy. It is the lifeblood of democracy itself. Creation of such an environment by the previous Goodluck Jonathan Administration, allowed the the opposition APC to emerge, to probably the relief of most Nigerians..
“The APC Government may not initiate or immerse itself in a culture of intimidation. They are not even a year old in the administration saddle.
“Asking the APGA Senatorial candidate for the Anambra Central Senatorial elections – Chief Victor Umeh, on whether he was speaking out against the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is simply fear mongering, scare-tactics and intimidation of popular candidates in our democracy.
“Chief Victor Umeh is a strong, faithful, patriotic Nigerian known to speak the truth to relevant quarters. He will only wish his opinions like any of the others in the polity, be considered, while moving on to other important matters bedeviling our country.”
The APGA Think-Tank warned that intimidation of rival elements in the polity is not the way forward, and sends a bad message to the constructive opposition who are eager to build and firm-up Nigerian national political structure.
