Arik Airline passengers on board a flight from London to Lagos were thrown into confusion when the emergency alarm system in the aircraft triggered off due to smoke from an electronic cigarette lit in the lavatory by a passenger.
The panic-gripped passengers had taken the blaring alarm as a sign of an impending disaster.
Already, the Airport Police Command has arrested the passenger, identified as Lawal Oluwabusola for smoking on board the aircraft.
In a statement issued by Mr. Livinus Chukwuma, the Airport Command’s Public Relations Officer said the man was apprehended on arrival at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
According to Chukwuma, the suspect was smoking electronic cigarette in the lavatory which triggered off the emergency alarm system in the aircraft causing confusion among passengers.
He said the suspect’s action violated the in-flight safety procedures.
Chukwuma said the suspect had been arraigned in court on a two-count charge in accordance with section 2(1) of the FAAN bye-law 2005 and section 166(1) (d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.
In a related development, the police command has also arrested a man for stealing $1,400 from a female passenger waiting to board Air France at the Lagos Airport.
Chukwuma said the passenger was resting on a couch in Gabfol Lounge at MMIA waiting to board the flight and forgot her purse containing the money.
The Airport Police Commissioner, Frederick Lakanu, has urged airport users nationwide to conform to the rules and regulations in the aviation industry as ignorance was not an excuse.
