Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have raided a microfinance bank and several offices belonging to airlines, carting away cash and other valuables worth millions of Naira in Imo state.
The hoodlums, it was learnt, struck in the early hours of yesterday attacked and burgled Fame Microfinance Bank as well as the offices of Arik and Air Peace Airlines, among others.
An eyewitness account reveals that the dare-devil bandits, who were heavily armed, came in two unmarked vehicles, overpowered the few security men attached to the bank and had a field day ransacking the offices.
According to the source, though some staff on night duty heard noise of snapping doors and windows in the Airlines’ block, they could not draw near for fear of being shot by the robbers.
In his words, “we are still in shock, how the robbers could have been able to operate freely without challenge with the number of security men at the Airport. It calls for serious concern because if the Airport cannot be safe, where else can be”.
When contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident saying it was a case of burglary.
He admitted receiving the report that some hoodlums broke into a Micro Finance Bank at the airport but said no report was got that they removed cash, wounded or killed anyone.
Enwerem hinted that investigation is already going on with the two security men attached to the bank are currently being interrogated and called on the public to offer useful information that could lead to nabbing the culprits.
Following the incident, it was gathered that activities at the Airport were temporarily shut down even as the affected airlines and officials of the airport were in sombre mood and rendered skeletal services.
