United Nations information centre, located in Ikoyi, Lagos, is currently in receipt of a petition to compel the okonjo-iwealaInternational Criminal Court, ICC, to prosecute former finance minister, Dr Ngozi-Okonjo- Iweala, and others for their role in the mismanagement of fund meant to buy arms ammunition for Nigeria’s military.
A human rights group, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda, HURMA, delivered the petition recently and a copy made available on Saturday to this paper by the national coordinator of the group, Comrade Isiak Buna.
The group also called on ICC to join hands with Nigerian government by investigating and prosecuting all corrupt Nigerians who were named in the arms scandal as part of its support for Nigeria anti-corruption war.
Part of the petition reads; “We wish to express our dissatisfaction to the present non-responsive nature of International Criminal Court, to the ongoing anti-corruption campaign/war in Nigeria.
“In a situation where injustice is being experienced in the country, citizens are encouraged to resort to international legal instruments and platform rather than taking laws into their hands.
“In light of the above, the imperative of the ICC in the ongoing battle to end impunity and retrieval of the looted wealth of our nation, Nigeria, from corrupt elements and institutions cannot be overemphasised.”
“In as much as we cannot criminalise all those that served in the previous administration under Dr. Jonathan Goodluck, when the evil was committed, certain personalities cannot be exonerated from being investigated and this includes Dr. Okonjo Iweala, the custodian of our economy and finance Minister under whose direct watch our commonwealth was diverted to private pockets.”
HURMA also called on ICC to begin prompt action on all pending petitions in its office, including the one written by Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, which it said would be for the benefit of Nigerians in general.

THE MOTHER OF ALL FINANCIAL CRIMINALITY TODAY IN NIGERIA IS EX PRESIDENT JONATHAN WHO SHOULD APPEAR BEFORE THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT FOR CAUSING GENOCIDE IN NIGERIA SACRIFICING THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT NIGERIANS FOR DIVERTING THE DEFENSE FUNDS INTO THE PRIVATE POCKETS OF BIG WIGS AND HIS PARTY MEMBERS. OF COURSE, AS A FINANCE MINISTER THE WOMAN NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL FOR LIFE FOR HER DELIBERATE OVERSIGHT OVER THE FINANCES UNDER HER WATCH. HOWEVER, THE BUCK STOPS AT JONATHAN.

  • Cyril

These are just malicious attempts to soil Okonjo-Iweala’s name. She has cleared the air, explaining how the arms fund was disbursed, she was only following the instructions of former president Jonathan. And the funds was only supposed to be a loan. What else do people want to hear?

  • Iluyomade

This is pure propaganda, a futile effort to ruin Okonjo-Iweala’s image. She disbursed the arms as directed by the former President Goodluck Jonathan for security matters – an urgent, emergency situation which required immediate attention. If she didn’t disburse the funds, people would say she didn’t care about the Chibok girls. What will satisfy people

  • Ikechukwu Benneth

Without being told, this petition to probe Dr Okonjo-Iweala is bound to fail because the former finance minister is loaded with facts and figures.

  • Ikechukwu Benneth

Despite all the petitions again her, Dr Okonjo-Iweala continued to shine on a daily basis. Her enemies should repent of their sins.

  • Ikechukwu Benneth

I wonder why Nigerians are still taken seriously, these useless people filing petitions against Dr Okonjo-Iweala who fought tirelessly to ensure the Nigerian economy stands.

  • Ikechukwu Benneth

Those behind the petitions written Dr Okonjo-Iweala should be ashamed that the only thing they could do for themselves is to cause confusion amongst Nigerians.

  • Seye Tiamiyu

I can see HURMA are serious about their opposition of Dr Iweala, and the truth is they will fail. ICC has already ignored them because they have recognised them for what they are; enemies of progress.

  • Kemisola Robert

I laugh! HURMA thinks they can just tell ICC to do whatever
they like just because they feel so. Why won’t ICC ignore them? When they are
requesting for the prosecution of an innocent woman (Dr Iweala); without due evidence.
They should better find something to do and stop shouting ICC about.

    Though
some people want us to believe it is not her that was responsible for reduction
in Nigerian debt. These same people also contradict themselves in trying to say
she ran the economy aground. What these people fail to see is that even though
they served at some points in their careers as CBN governors or in other
capacities, Okonjo-Iweala’s role in the debt relief by the Paris Club in 2006
was monumental. Has any other finance minister this achievement ever since? If
not for her influential role in the World Bank will Soludo or other loquacious
elements like him go to the Bank on their questionable moral authority to ask
for debt relief? Before Okonjo-Iweala, for how long have African countries been
asking for reparations from the western world?

  • Bolaji Johnson

I believe that the issue of whether Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala did what they said she did should be left to the appropriate authority not for the media to be making unnecessary stories out of it.

  • Bolaji Johnson

I would say that we should allow the facts speak for themselves. In the end, whatever is true would be true, and whatever is a lie would be exposed. Time always tells.

  • Bolaji Johnson

It’s been on for a while, People just want to bring Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala down. She has achieved great things in her own right and is a worthy ambassador of Nigeria, so I think it is unfair to always discuss her in the news as if she has been declared guilty.

  • Bolaji Johnson

It’s like people just want to get quick recognistion everytime. All of a sudden, HURMA become an internationally recognised body of people that want to fight against Okonjo Iweala. This should not be. A group from nowhere suddenly comes to the scene and uses the issue of the day to get social relevance.

  • Uzoma Ngozi

When people want to find an excuse to promote what they know is wrong they hide under the name of a Human Right Group. Okonjo Iweala is innocent and that is the reason all the baseless allegations against her can’t be backed up with evidence.

  • Uzoma Ngozi

HARUMA or whatever you call yourself, it is so obvious that you are a sponsored group. You guys have done all you can just to tarnish the image of Dr. Okonjo Iweala, yet the lord keeps protecting her. And the simple reason is because she gave her all when she served this country.

  • Uzoma Ngozi

And you should know that the ICC don’t handle such case. If the country where she belongs don’t find her guilty to prosecute her, there is nothing the ICC can do. Shame on this so called group HARUMA, because you want to promote destructive politics.

  • Afeez

Who else can withstand the consistent public humiliation Okonjo-Iweala has grappled with for many months, yet she remains unshaken or found guilty. For the mere fact that nothing has been pinned to her is a testimonial for the whole world to know how genuine and innocent this woman is and how this has reflected in her recent appointments and awards.

  • Afeez

The memo Okonjo-Iweala released to the public with regards to the
alleged misuse of returned Abacha’s funds is yet another evidence to
showcase a woman of integrity and class. This is another failed project
    from the concerned quarters.

  • Michael

Should Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s name be mentioned alongside a man who has not only be accused of corrupt practices, but has also pleaded guilty to the same offence? She has never and will never be found guilty of any money laundering issue or any other incriminating offence.

  • Michael

For all the doubting Thomases, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has
publicly declared and clarified her stance and involvement over and over again, so there is no need to instigate or
manipulate the our dear Nigerians into believing that Okonjo-Iweala may
as well be a part and parcel of who or what she is not or can ever be.

  • Michael

Her haters foolishly believed she should
melt and tremble since they have used several means to make life
difficult for her. But being as bold as a lion, she has proved once
again how dogged and honest she is as far as fulfilling her purpose and
    living her life peacefully is.
