Youth Enterprise With Innovation in Nigeria, YOUWIN beneficiaries in Ekiti State have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the alleged diversion of funds resulting in prolonged non-release of their grants by the Ministry of Finance .
Expressing their displeasure with newsmen in Ado Ekiti yesterday, the Coordinator, Mr. Stephen Olutola Afolabi, explained that, out of the 1,500 beneficiaries of the grant in Nigeria, Ekiti has only 11.
The Coordinator alleged that their findings from the ministry indicated that the grants meant for beneficiaries in Ekiti and Osun States were allegedly diverted for personal use.
YOUWIN is a job creation platform established by the Goodluck Jonathan administration aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs to help winners to strengthen and expand existing innovative ideas into solid businesses.
Afolab disclosed that they had received their first tranche on January 9, 2015 while on May 28, 2015, the second tranche was paid to 1007 in Nigeria but only nine of the beneficiaries in Osun and Ekiti got payment.
Afolabi said: “We have been patiently waiting and expecting our bank alerts on a daily basis since 28th May, 2015 but to no avail. Each time we put a call through to YOUWIN secretariat their responses have always been ‘we are still processing your payment’ until yesterdaym 14th September, 2015 that we sent delegates to make a case at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Abuja.
“We were shocked to the marrow when the delegates reported to us that they gathered from a reliable source at the Federal Ministry of Finance that the money meant for all the awardees in Ekiti and Osun States has been diverted for personal use.
“It will be of our utmost desire if our plight is seriously looked into by the necessary agencies of government so that our grant can be given to us without further delay, in order to revive our businesses.”
